Medical Faculty Students’ Union

Medical Faculty Students’ Union of Faculty of Medicine, University of Colombo (MFSU) is the sole official representative body of the students of Faculty of Medicine Colombo, established under 1978 No. 16 Act of the Parliament of Sri Lanka, functioning under the University of Colombo Student Union By-Law No.1 of 1989. The MFSU consists of 13 legally elected student representatives including a President, Vice President, Secretary, Junior Treasurer, Editor and 8 Committee Members. MFSU represents the student community at the Faculty Board meetings.

The current MFSU was established under a fresh policy declaration on 2011/2012 Academic Year. Adhering to this, over the years MFSU has succeeded in maintaining a fully democratic, transparent and student-centered representative body, effectively functioning for the benefit of the students as well as for national needs. The MFSU ensures political neutrality at all times and prevents influence of external political parties from taking root in the faculty. It also has notably stood against ragging, creating a pleasant environment for all the students to learn without discrimination. MFSU has been the cornerstone for establishing the culture of harmonious coexistence of all batches with mutual understanding and respect, at Faculty of Medicine Colombo. MFSU holds regular committee meetings where matters are discussed extensively and decisions are taken democratically, and in times of need holds General Body Meetings where all students can directly participate in discussions.

The MFSU stands for the needs and rights of students in the present as well as the future. It strives to protect the “right to free education” of all citizens, and does not hesitate to lead and fight when it is threatened. For that purpose, all students proudly stand with the MFSU with rational reasoning and enthusiasm. In addition, MFSU coalesced with Medical Students’ Welfare Society (MSWS) function as a single body in maintaining various educational and recreational facilities at the faculty for the wellbeing of the students, carrying out several annual projects and also coordinating the extra-curricular activities of all societies and batches at the faculty. MFSU represents the students of Faculty of Medicine Colombo at national level organizations and alliances as required, ensuring political neutrality and protecting the rights of students as a priority.
