About The Course 

The course consists of four interconnected Sections.

SECTION 1: Health and Health System in Sri Lanka, gives an overview of health in Sri Lanka. There is one module on this area (Health & Health Status).

SECTION 2 deals with the health sector and has the following modules: Health Systems & Health Organization, Health Interventions & Inter-sectoral Action).

SECTION 3 is on Determinants of Health, and explores how different sectors influence health in Sri Lanka.

SECTION 4 is on Challenges Facing Health in All Policies. This will be a literature review conducted by the candidates to collate the information learned from the course.

This course is organized in such a manner that participants will gain insight into concepts highlighting the inter- relationship between health and development and the multifaceted nature of such relationship. Experts drawn from a wide range of specialties will deliver the course. By this,you will apply the knowledge gained, to analyze and overcome present and future challenges in health development.

The course

  • Is conducted in English Language
  • Duration: 12 months (Part time)
  • The teaching methods included learning opportunities other than didactic lectures, such as assignments, debates, student seminars and small group discussions.
  • Gives a comprehensive view of health from different disciplines
  • Provides Knowledge and skills useful for career development of participants
  • Introduce participant to research issues enabling them to embark on a Masters or a PhD programme

We have over 250 alumni of this course and some have used it to register for PhD programmes abroad. This innovative course attempts to broaden the concepts and applications related to health. It explores health and its extensions from a diversity of angles in an attempt to improve the relevant understanding and awareness. These are very current topics in the context of initiatives such as Health in All Policies and Social Determinants of Health.

Highly qualified module coordinators and resource persons from a variety of disciplines give their valuable inputs during the course.

We commenced this course in May 2004.It is a unique course, and we have continued with our mission to explore issues relating to health from diverse disciplines. We see the course providing a foundation to current global, regional and country-based initiatives such as Health in All Policies (HiAP) and Social Determinants of Health of the World Health Organization.

We are in the process of developing a short textbook to accompany the course titled “An Introduction to Health in All Policies”. A course web site is available with reading materials, lectures and video clips.

We have continued with a highly qualified team of resource persons from a range of disciplines who will enrich your learning experience. In order to gain the maximum from the course, please participate actively in its diverse learning activities. You will encounter different modes of teaching / learning: lectures, assignments, field visits, student seminars, guest lectures, debates and discussions.

AIMED AT WHOM

The course is especially aimed at those who are working in health related disciplines in the public, private or non- profit-making organizations. Health professionals who wish to widen their knowledge of broader issues that are related to health will benefit by this course immensely.

OBJECTIVES

On completion of the course, you will be able to

  • Understand the concepts related to health, the dynamic nature of its determinants and its relevance to Health in All Policies
  • Describe and analyze the multifaceted nature of health and related organizations or sectors.
  • Apply the knowledge and skills gained to analyze present and future challenges in health development
  • Take an advocacy role in encouraging others to view health outcomes to be a result of policies and advances in other sectors.

TEACHING METHODS

The course will be delivered by experts drawn from a wide range of specialties such as e.g. sociology, economics, epidemiology, demography, ethics and human rights.

The emphasis will be on case based interactive teaching, which would facilitate active learning by the participants. Field visits, group discussions, seminars and lectures will be included to complement the above. Supervisors to complete their dissertation successfully will guide participants.

ASSESSMENTS

This will be varied types of assessment for the learners in order to re-in force your learning. During and after each module you will be assessed by a range of methods such as short essay, assignments etc. These assessments will be used to give feedback to you on your learning. On completion of module, 10 there will be a more formal assessment.
