The University Psychiatry Unit is accredited by the Postgraduate Institute of Medicine to provide clinical training for Postgraduates in Psychiatry, Medicine, Family Medicine and Venereology. It also provides clinical training for Masters in Clinical Psychology program.
It is one of the main training centers for training of Postgraduate Psychiatry and its training slots are much sought after. The unit provides wide exposure in clinical training conducted in a General Hospital setting. The Department provides sub-specialisation training in Child and Adolescence Psychiatry in the Child Psychiatry Unit at the Lady Ridgeway Hospital for Children in Colombo. The Department can also support sub-specialisation training in General Adult Psychiatry, Liaison Psychiatry, Drug and Alcohol Use and Psychotherapy.
It provides training in research and postgraduate trainees are encouraged to participate in research, present at scientific meetings and publish their work in journals.
The Department staff contribute to teaching and examinations at the Postgraduate Institute of Medicine and serve as members of Boards of Study in the PGIM. Dr.Raveen Hanwella is the Chairman of the Board of Study in Psychiatry of the PGIM.
