The Department of Surgery is involved in teaching the undergraduates at many stages of their training, i.e. from the introductory clinical sciences to numerous modules up to the final year professorial appointment. In addition to general surgical training, postgraduate doctors spend between 6 months and 12 months of specialist training in upper GI, colorectal, laparoscopic surgery, hepatobiliary-pancreatic surgery, renal and liver transplant surgery, vascular surgery, ERCP and upper/lower GI endoscopy. Postgraduates in Anaesthetics also come to our unit, for a 3 month appointment.
At any given time, in our unit, there are postgraduate trainees (i.e. registrars and senior registrars) who are affiliated to the Postgraduate Institute of Medicine (PGIM) undergoing training. In addition, there are doctors conducting research work leading to research degrees.
The department has its own mammography unit, vascular laboratory and a state of the art GI Physiology Laboratory (which has facilities to do high resolution upper GI and anorectal manometry, BRAVO capsule pH monitoring and capsule endoscopy). In addition, we also have facilities for upper GI endosonography and endo-anal ultrasound.
The University Surgical Unit of the Lady Ridgeway Hospital for Children (LRH) is run by the Department of Surgery. It has two consultant Paediatric Surgeons who are Senior Lecturers in the department. This unit is one of the four paediatric units in the LRH, which is a tertiary referral centre for neonates and paediatric patients. This unit is involved in the training Senior Registrars in Paediatric Surgery and also registrars in general surgery.
Our department gets a regular influx of elective students coming from the UK, Australia, Singapore and China. Therefore, elective appointments in our unit is encouraged for overseas students.
Since its establishment, the department has achieved recognition in general, vascular, paediatric and gastrointestinal surgery. Several research papers have been presented locally and overseas by the academic staff as well as undergraduate and post graduate trainees attached to our unit. To date, several research publications have been published in overseas indexed journals arising from the work carried out in the Department of Surgery.
