In loving memory of Professor Carlo Fonseka, a legend of our times
We are deeply saddened by the demise of Professor Carlo Fonseka who was the patriarch of the physiology fraternity of Sri Lanka.
He joined the Department of Physiology of our Faculty in 1962 after a brilliant academic career as a student of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Colombo. He served the Department for nearly three decades, until he joined the Faculty of Medicine, University of Kelaniya in 1991. A teacher par excellence, he has taught and inspired many of us in the academic staff.
Professor Fonseka was a Founder Member and Past President of the Physiological Society of Sri Lanka, a society he mentored until very recently. The trophy awarded to the winners of the annual Inter-Medical Faculty Physiology Quiz is named after him, in honour to this giant in the physiology academia.
He was an iconic figure, a renaissance man excelling in many fields such as philosophy, music, cinema, literature, economics and politics, in addition to medicine.
The void left by him will be impossible to fill and the legacy of our dear teacher and mentor will continue for years to come.
May he attain the supreme bliss of Nibbana!
