The Clinical Research Centre for Complex Hormonal Disorders (CCHD) was established in the Faculty of Medicine, University of Colombo in 2022 by Prof. Sumudu Nimali Seneviratne to address unmet healthcare needs of children and youth affected with complex hormonal disorders to optimize their well-being and long-term outcomes, and to increase awareness among the medical community and general public. The centre currently operates with a team of academics and clinicians representing multiple disciplines including paediatric and adult endocrinology, paediatric surgery, gynaecology & obstetrics, clinical psychology, genetics, and reproductive biology working together to provide holistic care for these patients.
Sri Lankan children and youth affected with rare hormonal conditions and their families have complex care needs that often require a range of specialized services but face a myriad of issues in accessing proper care. A multidisciplinary approach is required to enable appropriate management and long-term care for the affected individuals. Further, reduced awareness about these conditions among both general and medical communities hinders the optimal well-being of affected communities.
To establish a clinical research centre to cater to the health care needs of individuals affected with complex hormonal disorders such as DSD and CAH including monitoring and optimizing their well-being and long-term outcomes, and increasing awareness regarding these rare conditions among both medical and the general communities to promote earlier detection and greater acceptance of such persons affected with these disorders.
To provide a platform for early diagnosis, optimal care and long-term follow-up of children, adolescents and young adults with complex hormonal disorders such as DSD and CAH in Sri Lanka, through the establishment of coordinated multidisciplinary clinical services, patient registries/ databases and collaborative research whilst raising awareness among medical and non-medical communities via medical and community platforms including webinars/ workshops, newsletters, booklets and social media.
