The Faculty of Medicine, University of Colombo, Sri Lanka, established in 1870, is the undisputed premier medical school in the country.
Located in the heart of Colombo with easy access to the National Hospital of Sri Lanka and the Colombo group of hospitals, the Faculty takes pride in its 150 years of history and tradition. Ours is the most sought-after Medical Faculty in the country, attracting students who obtain highest Z scores at the General Certificate of Education Advanced Level examination.
The Faculty has the expertise, technology and resources to produce a well-rounded medical graduate, who is capable of meeting the demands of the modern- day patient care and disease prevention. Its dedicated, high caliber academic and support staff provide their services to undergraduate and postgraduate students.

Medical Education
The Faculty of Medicine, Colombo pioneered a student-centered medical education system two decades ago. Over the years this has contributed to producing a doctor equipped with comprehensive and up to date medical knowledge, key technical competencies and soft skills. The behavioral sciences stream guides our graduates in ethical practices and professionalism and promotes the development of positive attitudes. The Community Sciences Stream equips our graduates to serve patients from various social and economic strata and to significantly contribute towards Preventive Medicine.
Contribution to the Community
The staff & students of the faculty commit their time and expertise to serve the community in many ways. Health awareness programs & Campaigns conducted island wide from time to time & some Centers & Units make a valuable contribution as well. The Health & Wellness Unit offers workplace-based health programs, Laboratory Sample Collection Center facilitates a wide range of investigations to the general public, Human Genetics Unit serves genetic testing and counseling, Family Medicine Unit and Center for Combating Tobacco are some among them.
Medical Researching
The Faculty of Medicine engages in a wide range of research activities both in Sri Lanka and overseas. Our academic staff spearhead cutting edge research and through their work help lives of thousands, solving real-world problems through a large network of partnerships and collaborations. Research and Higher Degrees Committee (RHDC) is the statutory committee administrating postgraduate research of the Faculty and the Research Promotion and Facilitation Center (RPFC) promoted a positive research culture by way of training the researchers, facilitating collaborations and technology transfer.

Student Life
It is well recognized that wellness in body, mind and spirit is essential as the students learn, grow and change during their time here. Therefore, in addition to the exceptional medical education delivered, the faculty offers students a range of facilities and opportunities to make their student life a pleasant, comfortable and enriching one. The amenities include hostel accommodations, library and teaching hospitals, in-house cafeteria, health center, counseling services, and financial assistance. The student life in the faculty is vibrant with many extracurricular activities such as sports, entertaining, religious & cultural events that are led by the students themselves with assistance of the faculty.
Overseas Electives Program
Medical elective is a short term programme that has designed for medical students as a primary experience before the career. Facilitating spaces for international students for short term electives is the main objective in this programme.
