Post graduate Diploma in Gender and Health is designed for doctors, health administrators, allied health professionals, lawyers, social scientists and any other interest groups with a passion for gender and health.

Over the course of one year, the programme aims to recognise the importance of gender as a social determinant of health, identify gender differences and inequalities that affect the health of individuals and to distinguish between the gender differences and patterns of morbidity and mortality in men and women in relation to specific diseases.

It also covers the gender differences of healthcare professionals in the work environment and harness that knowledge for improved output, appropriate responses to gender-based violence (GBV) and seeks to promote the integration of gender as a social determinant of health into policy development, research, health services, resource allocation and project and programme planning, monitoring and implementation.

At the completion of this course the participants will be able to,

  • Recognise the importance of gender as a social determinant of health
  • Identify gender differences and inequalities that affect the health of individuals
  • Distinguish between the gender differences and patterns of morbidity and mortality in men and women in relation to specific diseases
  • Recognise the gender differences of healthcare professionals in the work environment and harness that knowledge for improved output
  • Respond appropriately to gender-based violence (GBV)
  • Promote the integration of gender as a social determinant of health into policy development, research, health services, resource allocation and project and programme planning, monitoring and implementation.

This Programme is designed for;

doctors, health administrators, allied healthcare professionals, lawyers, social scientists and any other interest groups (e.g. NGO personnel)

Entry Criteria

Candidates should have;

A basic degree in any field related to health, law or social sciences and worked for at least one year in a healthcare setting or health related setting

OR

Professional qualification in health, law or social sciences from a recognized professional body acceptable to the Faculty Board of FMUC with three years’ work experience in any sector of a healthcare setting or health related setting

OR

Any other Diploma from a recognised University/Institution or an equivalent qualification related to health, law or social sciences and recognised by the Faculty Board of FMUC with five years’ work experience in a healthcare setting or health related setting

AND

Should be currently employed in a healthcare institution or health and gender related work setting

  • Course Fee: LKR 190,000 (can be paid in 03 instalments: First instalment LKR 70,000 Second and Third instalments LKR 60,000 each)
  • Application Fee: LKR 3,000
  • Registration Fee: LKR 15,000
  • Examination Fee: LKR 15,000

A duly completed application form should be submitted with documentary evidence of qualifications and work experience. An objective marking scheme will be used for assessing the applications of candidates. All applicants who meet the eligibility criteria will have to face a computer literacy test and an English language competency test. By scoring a minimum of 50% at these tests, the candidate will be qualified to proceed with the registration. The first fifty applicants as per ranking order based on the final mark will be selected for the Programme.

Programme delivery will be mainly online.

Teaching activities will be done in the weekends (mainly Saturdays: 8 am – 5 pm)

Submission of an assignment for each of the twelve modules would be required and would contribute as continuous assessments (CA). CAs will contribute to 40% of the summative mark. All assignments should be completed, to be eligible for the end-of-course examination.

End-of-course examination would consist of a three-hour essay paper.

The total final summative assessment mark constitutes 60% from the end of course examination and 40% from the continuous assessment.
