Faculty Song Video

The Faculty Song of the Faculty of Medicine stands as a proud symbol of the Faculty’s history, identity, and collective spirit. As part of preserving and celebrating this rich legacy, a commemorative video featuring newly created footage was produced, bringing together members of the faculty community across generations.

Conceptual guidance for the creation of the video was provided by Senior Professor Vidya Jyothi Vajira H. W. Dissanayake, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine. His vision ensured that the video authentically reflected the ethos, traditions, and continuity of the Faculty.

The production of the video was directed under the leadership of Dr Hermali Silva and Dr Aruni Gallage, Director and Deputy Director of the Colombo Medical Faculty Publishers, respectively. Video editing was carried out by Mr W. A. R. L. Chandula.

We gratefully acknowledge the contributions of all academics, administrators, non-academic staff, and students who supported this initiative in numerous ways, making it a truly collective endeavour.

The lyrics of the Faculty Song were written by the late Professor Nandadasa Kodagoda, while the original music was composed by Dr. Rohana Weerasinghe when the song was first released in Sinhala in 1995. With the subsequent inclusion of Tamil lyrics, the music was recomposed by Tharindu Dasun Jayatilake, ensuring inclusivity while preserving the spirit of the original composition. The song was sung by Jagath Wickramasinghe and Meena Prasadini.

The Faculty Song was first performed on 1 June 1995, during the 125th Anniversary Celebrations of the Faculty of Medicine. The photographs displayed below capture historic moments from that occasion, including the inaugural performance by the student choir accompanied by the student orchestra. Another photograph from the same celebration shows Professor Vajira H. W. Dissanayake, the current Dean of the Faculty, who was then serving as the President of the Medical Students’ Union, at the podium, delivering the vote of thanks with the Prime Minister Hon. Sirimavo Bandaranaike, Vice Chancellors Prof. W. D. Lakshman and Prof. Nandadasa Kodagoda, and the Dean Prof. Mahroff Ismail on stage.

Together, the Faculty Song, its history, and the newly produced video stand as a testament to the enduring values, unity, and heritage of the Faculty of Medicine, linking past achievements with present and future generations.
