Diploma in Basic Clinical and Reproductive Laboratory Techniques

  • To produce well-trained and qualified Medical Laboratory Technicians and Technologists to fulfill the national needs for health laboratories.
  • To provide laboratory tutors for Para-medical Training Institutions in the country and abroad.
  • To equip the trainees/ school leavers with the basic theoretical and practical knowledge for acquiring special skills at a later stage.
  • To make them fully conversant with public health subjects and technology of medical laboratory services.
  • At the end of the course, students will be able to acquire the following learning

outcomes:

  • Understand the basics of anatomy and physiology of the human body.
  • Understand the fundamentals of biochemistry, hematology, microbiology,
    molecular biology, and reproductive biology.
  • Learn practical knowledge in different areas of clinical laboratories – such as biochemistry, microbiology, hematology, molecular biology and reproductive biology.
  • Learn good laboratory practices and laboratory safety methods
  • Develop skills to perform basic clinical laboratory assays
  • Execute ethics in laboratory and clinical practice

Learning hours

  • Lectures:                         150 hours
  • Practical demonstration: 70 hours
  • Hands on practical:         80 hours
  • Total                                 300 hours
  • 06 Months
  • Minimum of three (03) pass grades in one sitting at the G.C.E. A/L Examination, Sri Lanka, in the Bio Science stream

and

  • Minimum of simple pass (S grade) for English at the G.C.E. O/L Examination, Sri Lanka

Or

  • An equivalent or higher qualification acceptable to the senate
  • From the eligible applicants, candidates to follow the course will be selected based on their educational qualifications.

  • Lectures Written Examination Consisting of 10 MCQs/SBAs (10 marks) and2 SEQs (20marks) [Total 30 marks]
  • Lectures Assignments A total of two assignments will be given and each Lectures assignment will carry 10 marks [Total 20 marks]
  • Lectures Practical assessment Practical assessment on clinical and reproductive laboratory techniques [Total 50 marks]

  • To pass the examination, the candidate should obtain a minimum of 50% in each component of the evaluation and an aggregate mark of 50%
