Infectious diseases are some of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality globally, with two-thirds of deaths of children under five years of age being caused by infectious diseases. are continuing threats to human health encompassing not only traditional tropical diseases but also the challenges thrown up by emerging diseases with pandemic potential, the practice of medicine in conflict and humanitarian settings and antimicrobial resistance.
The Diploma in Infectious Diseases and Global Health covers the important infectious diseases that are prevalent in resource limited regions and aims to teach the doctors the knowledge and the skills required to understand, diagnose, treat and prevent diseases that are especially prevalent in tropical and developing countries where resources may be limited.
This programme is particularly useful for medical doctors who have trained in medicine in a developed country, but intend to practice in the tropics. It is also useful for the medical doctors already practicing in developing countries who require an update on infectious, parasitic, and other health problems, and for doctors in developed countries who need to diagnose and manage imported infections.
As new pathogens emerge and existing ones evolve, the need for highly skilled and knowledgeable healthcare workers in infectious disease medicine becomes increasingly critical. The impact of infectious diseases on society cannot be underestimated and the Diploma in Infectious Diseases and Global Health course presents a transformative opportunity for healthcare professionals to address this global health crisis effectively.
At the completion of this course the participants will be able to,
- Acquire a comprehensive overview of the important infectious diseases that are prevalent in resource limited regions.
- Perform basic diagnostic procedures and identify the organisms that cause tropical illnesses.
- Acquire an in-depth understanding of different types of bacterial, viral, fungal and parasitic infections including the pathogenesis, laboratory diagnosis, treatment and prevention

- Acquire a comprehensive overview of treatment and public health aspects of tuberculosis and leprosy with regard to epidemiology and prevention
- Gain comprehensive knowledge with regard to the laboratory diagnosis of tuberculosis and leprosy

- Acquire a comprehensive overview of maternal and child health
- Gain a good knowledge with regard to basic principles of immunology and immunization

The candidates who hold a medical degree (MBBS or equivalent) from a medical school will be eligible for the Diploma in Infectious Diseases and Global Health.
A duly completed application form should be submitted with documentary evidence of qualifications and required experience. An objective marking scheme will be used for assessing the applications of candidates.
Blended mode
There are 12 modules and the duration of each module will be 4 weeks. The main method of delivering this course will be by online learning, through self-learning material, video clips and recorded Power Point presentations. Module 12 will consist of workshops and practical sessions.
Continuous Assessment:
There will be an online assessment at the end of each module, for all the 12 modules. The online assessments will contribute 24% to the final mark.
End-of-programme Assessment:
There will be two MCQs from each module with a total of 24 MCQ questions. These MCQs will contribute 24% to the final mark.
There will be eleven OSPE questions from all the modules. These OSPEs will contribute 22% to the final mark.
There will be three SEQs for all the modules. These SEQs will contribute 30% to the final mark.
The candidates will need to obtain an overall mark of 50% from all the assessments to pass the examination. The candidates who are successful at the examination will be awarded the Diploma in Infectious Diseases and Global Health by the Faculty of Medicine, University of Colombo.
