Sports and Exercise Science is the application of scientific principles to sports and exercise training, with the aim of improving sports performance, development and supporting recreational exercising public

Master of Science in Sports & Exercise Science is a 2 years  program conducted by the Department of Allied Health Sciences.

This program is designed to develop the intellectual capacities and personal qualities as well as to acquire a broad range of practical, professional and employability skills that can be applied to a range of future career paths.

With the completion of the Master program the graduates,

  • should be able to demonstrate clear understanding of theoretical knowledge in Sports and Exercise Science.
  • should be able to critically evaluate the current issues in the subject area.
  • should apply advanced techniques and skills relevant to their professional practice in the field of study.
  • should be able to deal with complex issues systematically and creatively, and make sound judgments and communicate decisions clearly to others.
  • should demonstrate self-direction and originality in tackling and solving problems and be able to plan and implement tasks independently in a professional manner.
  • should demonstrate understanding of basic research concepts and their implementation.
  • should develop personal attributes to become lifelong learners
  • should be able to access, review and compile scientific evidence on a research topic in the field of Sports and Exercise Science.
  • should be able to formulate the research objectives, design and write a research proposal related to Sports and Exercise Science.
  • should be able to identify, address, apply and obtain ethics clearance for ethical issues in research.
  • should be able to analyze data and test the relevant hypothesis using a statistical software and relevant statistical methods and techniques
  • should be able to interpret and draw valid conclusions from the research and add to existing knowledge or generate new knowledge in the field of Sports and Exercise Science
  • should be able write a report and disseminate research findings by publishing in journals, and presenting orally or by a poster
  • should be able to apply research findings in work setting for the benefit the workers and/or the industry

A person who satisfies any one of the following qualifications is eligible for applying to enroll in the programme,

  • Successful completion of the PgDip (Sports and Exercise Science) conducted by the Department of Allied Health Sciences, Faculty of Medicine, University of Colombo.

OR

  • A professional course/program equivalent to SLQF level 8 or above related to sports and exercise science recognized by the Faculty Board of Faculty of Medicine, University of Colombo. Such applicants may be exempted from the course units in the first year based on topics covered in their professional course. However, they shall be required to follow all the rest of bridging modules in the first year which are not covered during their professional course.

AND

  • Obtaining at least 50% marks at the competency assessment examination (computer literacy and English knowledge) and an interview conducted by Faculty of Medicine University of Colombo.

Course participants will be selected based on the qualifications, performance at an interview and a competency assessment examination (computer literacy and English knowledge) conducted by Faculty of Medicine University of Colombo.
