Centre for Genetics and Genomics(previously known as Human Genetics Unit, HGU) of the Faculty of Medicine University of Colombo is the only center in Sri Lanka dedicated to providing clinical genetic services including genetic testing and genetic counseling. In addition we conduct both undergraduate, postgraduate, and CME courses in genetics for medical and allied health professionals and programs aimed at raising genetic awareness among the public. We have an active research program in reproductive genetics. We play in advocacy to make genetic services available to the people of Sri Lanka and contribute to policy formation in the field of genetics in Sri Lanka.

The CGG is located in the Faculty of Medicine, in Colombo 8, in the heart of Colombo and can be easily accessed via public transport [Punchi Borella stop on the Maradana-Borella road; and Carey College stop on the Town Hall-Punchi Borella road]. If you are coming by car parking is available on the Norris canal road for visitors. Visitor vehicles will not be allowed in to the Faculty premises.

History

The Human Genetics Unit, established in 1983, is one of the oldest Genetics Centres in the Asian Region. The Unit was founded by its founding Director, Prof. Rohan W Jayasekara, who continues in that capacity to date. The HGU serves as the National Referal Centre for Human Genetics in Sri Lanka setting standards for Human Genetics in the Country.
