Technology plays an important role in every industry and the health industry is not an exception. The health sector is experiencing integration of digital technology across its specialties and sub-specialties in a rapid phase. Artificial intelligence, telemedicine, biomedical sensors, distributed electronic health records, electronic health records, health information exchange, personal health records, genome-based personalized medicine, clinical decision support systems, mobile ambulatory health care and medical robotics are some of the applications of Medical Technology in the health domain.

With this emerging role of Medical Technology, it is vital to sensitize the medical profession on the latest developments and cutting-edge technology which penetrate the clinical and healthcare setting. In keeping with the Vision and Mission of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Colombo to produce an undergraduate with knowledge of modern technology which is required to become a competent doctor, Medical Technology will play a pivotal role.

The Department of Medical Technology will focus on both undergraduate and postgraduate education, research related to application of information technology and engineering in medicine and healthcare related technology innovation. Within its operational scope, the department will provide its expertise to identify the core areas of growth and disruption in Medical Technology and inculcate the knowledge and skills in undergraduate and postgraduate students while engaging in the research, development, and innovation to facilitate the health system transition to digital health.
