Objective

The Global Launch of the 2024 Lancet Countdown on Health and Climate Change aims to raise urgent awareness about the escalating health threats posed by climate change.

Key Messages

Lancet countdown ensures that health is central to how decision-makers understand and respond to climate change.

Record-breaking health risks: The report will reveal that the dangers to human health from climate change are at their worst yet. This includes increased extreme weather events, rising sea levels, and disruptions to food security.
Lagging action, continued fossil fuel dependence: Despite the severity of the situation, progress towards mitigating climate change and adapting to its effects remains insufficient. Subsidies for fossil fuels are at an all-time high, hindering the transition to clean energy.
The urgency for redirection of resources: The report will call for a fundamental shift in priorities. Resources currently directed towards fossil fuels need to be redirected to support a zero-carbon future that prioritizes human health and well-being.
Health co-benefits of climate action: The report will highlight the positive health outcomes associated with tackling climate change. This includes cleaner air, improved food security, and a reduction in heat-related illnesses.
Focus on public engagement and policy solutions: The launch will emphasize the importance of public awareness and political action. By understanding the health risks, both individuals and policymakers can push for stronger climate action.
