The Community Physiotherapy Camp– Kirivehera, Kataragama
The Rural Health Research Centre (RHRC), Kataragama, in collaboration with the Colombo Physiotherapy Alumni Association (COLPAA) and the Department of Allied Health Sciences, Faculty of Medicine, University of Colombo, successfully conducted the Community Physiotherapy Camp “Suwa Abimana” on 11th October 2025 at the Kirivehera premises, Kataragama.
The event aimed to enhance awareness and access to physiotherapy and rehabilitation services for rural communities and to promote awareness about preventive health and mobility care. More than 350 participants benefited from the free physiotherapy consultations, assessments, and treatments delivered by a dedicated team of physiotherapists, academic staff, and undergraduate students.
Patients with musculoskeletal pain, neurological conditions, geriatric issues, and chronic disabilities were managed. In addition, participants received valuable education on exercise, posture correction, and home-based rehabilitation strategies.
A special highlight of the event was COLPAA’s generous donation of physiotherapy equipment worth approximately LKR 700,000 to strengthen the services of the Community Physiotherapy Clinic at RHRC, Kataragama.
The programme was graced by officials from the University of Colombo, the MOH Office, and the Kataragama Divisional Secretariat, along with the presence of Ven.Kobawaka Damminda Thero from Kiriwehera Raja Maha Viharaya,Kataragama, whose collective support and collaboration contributed to the success of the event.
This initiative demonstrated the importance of partnership in extending physiotherapy care to underserved communities. RHRC extends sincere appreciation to COLPAA, the Faculty of Medicine, and all volunteers for their contribution to improving rural health and rehabilitation services in Sri Lanka.
