Department of Clinical Medicine – Academic

Contribution to MBBS

The department contributes to almost all the components of the medical curriculum, and in particular to the Clinical Sciences Stream. In addition, the department contributes to  Applied Sciences Stream, Behavioural Sciences Stream and Community Sciences Stream by organizing and teaching several academic modules under them.

The teaching program includes bed side teaching in the wards, clinics and the acute admission unit of the National Hospital of Sri Lanka (NHSL), where there is a wide range of clinical problems rarely seen in any other hospital. There is an innovative teaching program for the final year students in the 100 bed University Medical Unit (Wards 41 and 48B) in a modern hospital complex. The department has a new teaching and research facility, Clinical Medicine and Research Centre-ClinMARC, in the NHSL, provides several educational facilities for clinical students.

Elective Programme

The department provides elective opportunities for specific subject areas on short term basis under oversees elective program.

Our unit is accredited by the Post Graduate Institute of Medicine, to train post graduates in General Medicine and Nephrology for the training programs leading to MD in Medicine and board certification in the specialty. We have on average 4 registrar trainees and 2 senior registrar trainees at any given time. Teaching/ learning is mainly opportunistic and complemented by regular journal clubs, grand rounds, case discussions and one-to-one teaching sessions. Our members have served on the academic Boards of Study in Medicine, Family Medicine, Sports Medicine and in the advisory body in Nephrology of the Postgraduate Institute in Medicine.

We serve as resource persons for Diploma, MSc and MD courses in venerology, tuberculosis and chest diseases, community medicine and in family medicine.

Our members have consistently examined at the MD Medicine, Diploma in Family Medicine, MD Psychiatry and MD Anaesthesiology.

We have been resource persons for the academic courses conducted by the relevant professional Colleges for MD Part I (Medicine), MD Part II (Medicine) and MS Part I (Surgery).
