Community Awareness Programme on Diabetes at Rural Health Research Centre- Kataragama

On December 4th, 2024, the Rural Health Research Centre (RHRC)- Kataragama, University of Colombo, Faculty of Medicine (UCFM), hosted a highly impactful Community Awareness Programme on Diabetes, attended by 21 participants from Kataragama. The event aimed to raise awareness about diabetes, its complications, and effective management and preventive strategies, fostering a healthier community.

Distinguished speakers included Dr. Chathuri Lanka, Medical Officer in Charge from the Divisional Hospital Kataragama; Dr. Ajith Kumara, Medical Officer from the Kataragama MOH Office; and Ms. Sanduni Thakshila, Physiotherapist at the Community Physiotherapy Clinic, Kataragama. Their insightful speeches highlighted crucial topics such as diabetes complications, the role of healthy eating habits, and the importance of physical activity in managing and preventing the condition.

The program was conducted in collaboration with the RHRC of  UCFM under the Dean Prof. Vajith Dissanayake and Convenor Dr. Asela Anthony and Diabetic and Endocrine association President Prof. Prasad Katulanda and his team, ensuring a comprehensive approach to diabetes education. Organized to commemorate World Diabetes Day 2024 under the theme “Diabetes and Wellbeing,” the event emphasized proactive measures for better health and empowered participants to take charge of their wellbeing.

Participants actively engaged in discussions, making the program a resounding success. The organizers extend their gratitude to all contributors and attendees for making this event a meaningful step towards a healthier community.
