
MFSU being the sole representative and central student body, coordinates activities between batches and societies ensuring smooth functioning of the daily faculty work. In collaboration with MSWS and other societies, students’ union organizes events with other faculties mediating and ensuring active student participation in such activities. Students’ union recognizes the needs and problems of students, brings forth new suggestions and accept ideas and suggestions arising within students which then act as the ultimate implementing body to establish the betterment of students.
Union brings forth considerations of students by representing faculty student population in the faculty board meetings acting as the sole intermediate student body. Thus MFSU coordinates correspondence between faculty administration and students as well as with medical professionals.
Adhering to its core values MFSU is committed to implementing its anti-rag policy making the faculty environment supportive for academic work and extracurricular activities. MFSU binds every student with brotherhood to achieve its prime goals.
Academic Committee
- Functioning under the Medical Faculty Students’ Union (MFSU) and the Medical Students’ Welfare Society (MSWS), the Academic Committee is led by the Educational Secretary of MSWS and includes student representatives from each batch ; namely Academic Heads, Batch Representatives, and Clinical Representatives. Each batch has its own academic committee, with monthly Grand Academic Committee meetings held to discuss overarching academic matters.
- The MFSU and MSWS also actively participate in faculty administrative meetings, where they bring forward student concerns and suggestions related to lectures, clinical training, and academic policy.

Google Drive & Academic Blog
- In support of continuous learning, the MFSU and MSWS maintain a Google Drive and an exclusive academic blog that provide students with curated learning materials and academic resources, accessible only to students of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Colombo.
Audio-Visual Equipment
- MFSU provides projectors and sound systems to support academic demonstrations, faculty events, and student-organized activities, ensuring smooth delivery of content and presentations.
Study Areas
- To promote focused study, especially during barrier examinations and major assessments, MFSU oversees and regulates dedicated student study areas within the faculty premises, ensuring accessibility and a conducive learning environment.
Medical Faculty Research Community (MFRC)
Launched in November 2020, the Medical Faculty Research Community (MFRC) was established by the MFSU and MSWS to foster a research-oriented culture among students and to capitalize on the abundant research opportunities within the faculty.
- MFRC offers a dynamic platform for research-minded students to collaborate, innovate, and engage with the wider scientific community, both locally and internationally. Projects are coordinated under the guidance of the MFRC Committee Member, with ongoing initiatives spanning various disciplines.

Medical Faculty Science & Technology Community (MFSTC)
The Medical Faculty Science & Technology Community (MFSTC) is a unique student-led body under the MFSU and MSWS, created to revive and promote interest in science, mathematics, computing, and engineering disciplines within the medical student community.
- Purpose: To nurture analytical, technical, and computational skills among medical students, empowering them to contribute meaningfully in both clinical practice and interdisciplinary scientific research.

Faculty Bookshop
- The Faculty Bookshop, operated jointly by the MFSU and MSWS, provides essential stationery items and photocopying services at concessionary rates to ensure affordability and accessibility for all students.
MSWS Library
- The MSWS Library offers a well-curated collection of novels, short stories, and literary works, creating an inviting space for recreational reading and mental relaxation.
Leisure & Recreational Activities
- To promote mental well-being and leisure, the MFSU maintains a student friendly common room equipped with facilities for carrom, table tennis, chess, and pool, along with cable TV for relaxation.
- Furthermore, recognizing the importance of music in stress relief and self-expression, the MFSU provides musical instruments in the common room and manages a dedicated music room that supports musical practices and performances at faculty events.
Faculty Gymnasium
- The Faculty Gymnasium, operated under the MSWS, supports the physical health and wellness of students by providing well-maintained facilities for regular exercise and fitness routines.
Sports and Physical Activities
- MFSU and MSWS work hand in hand with the Faculty of Medicine Sports Association (FMSA) to organize annual sporting events that enhance teamwork and athletic development.

Financial Assistance & Academic Support
- The MSWS provides financial assistance to students in need by facilitating access to scholarships offered by the alumni association and other funding schemes.
- MFSU and MSWS also offer support for student led academic and extracurricular events, in accordance with constitutional guidelines.
- Additional support services include the provision of clinical coats and scrubs at subsidized prices and locker facilities, easing the financial and logistical burden on students.
Aesthetic Circle
Established in January 2019, the Aesthetic Circle serves as a creative platform under the MFSU/MSWS, aimed at nurturing artistic talents among medical students.

- The Medical Faculty Students’ Union (MFSU) annually organizes “Sisu Viru Samaruma – අරගලය”, a solemn event held in honor of student comrades who sacrificed their lives in the fight for free education and free healthcare. This commemoration serves as a powerful reminder of their courage and unwavering commitment, inspiring current students to uphold and protect the values they fought for.
Faculty Trip & New Year Celebrations
- Each year, the MFSU and MSWS organize a Faculty Trip as part of traditional New Year celebrations, bringing together students, academic staff, and non-academic staff. This much anticipated event promotes strengthening bonds and fosters mutual understanding among all members of the faculty community.
Virtuous Healer – ඉසිවර අත්වැල
- ‘Virtuous Healer’ is a unique initiative by MFSU and MSWS aimed at nurturing a more compassionate, empathetic generation of doctors. The program includes hands-on projects such as refurbishing hospital wards, engaging directly with patients, and conducting games and aesthetic activities to uplift their spirits. At the same time, it helps participating students cultivate humane values and emotional intelligence, reinforcing the deeper purpose of the medical profession.
Magazine – වෙද සිසු හඬ
- The MFSU also publishes “වෙද සිසු හඬ”, a quarterly or annual student magazine that celebrates the creative, reflective, and extra-curricular dimensions of student life.
