Department of Paediatrics – Academic

Contribution to MBBS

The Department contributes to the undergraduate course from Foundation Modules onwards. Within the Faculty’s vertically integrated curriculum paediatric inputs are delivered through different learning methodologies within an integrated modular system from the second year onwards.

Clinical teaching is at the Lady Children’s Hospital,two maternity Hospitals in Colombo, at community level and in ambulatory settings. Students have opportunities in a variety of settings to learn up to date practice of paediatrics and emphasis is laid on acquiring procedural and communication skills. Competence including workplace performance and attitude are assessed using objective and reliable summative and formative assessments.   The overall pass rate in above 90%.

Elective Programme

The department provides elective opportunities for specific subject areas on short term basis under oversees elective program.

Academic staff regularly engage in supervision of clinical training and supervision of research projects of postgraduates. Historically it was this department that spearheaded postgraduate paediatric training and assessment in the country and this trend continues with academic staff holding positions of Chairperson and Secretary ( 2009-2012) in the Board of Study of Institute of Postgraduate Medicine Sri Lanka.
