The Department is involved in teaching activities of the Applied Sciences and Clinical Sciences Streams

Applied Sciences Stream

Gynecology and Obstetrics is one of the seventeen modules comes under the Applied Sciences Stream. Under the module the department conducts, Lecturers, Small Group Discussions, Problem Based Learning (PBL) Sessions, Fixed Learning Modules, Seminars and Inter-disciplinary teaching sessions.

Clinical Sciences Stream
With the commencement of the Reproductive Health Module in Applied Sciences Stream, Students begin their clinical rotations in Gynaecology and Obstetrics wards. The training comprises 18 weeks, including 2 week appointment of Introduction to Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Professorial wards, De Soyza Maternity Hospital, Colombo. Followed by 2 clinical appointments of 4 weeks each at De Soyza Maternity Hospital or Castle Maternity Hospital.
The Final Year Professorial appointment, lasting 8 weeks ( 4 weeks Gynecology and 4 weeks Obstetrics) is conducted by the Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics in the professorial unit of the De Soyza Maternity Hospital. The teaching programme comprises bed-side learning classes, teaching rounds, integrated ward classes and tutorials. During this appointment students are assessed on Gynecology and Obstetrics emergencies, clinical procedures, laboratory investigations..
At the end of the appointment the clinical competence of the students are assessed by 2 long cases each from Gynecology and Obstetrics.. A multiple choice questions and structured essay questions based written assessment is also carried out at the end of the final year.

Elective Programme

The department provides elective opportunities for specific subject areas on short term basis under oversees elective program.

The department receives postgraduate trainees in the obstetrics and gynaecology training programme of the Postgraduate Institute of Medicine, who work at levels of Registrar and Senior Registrar. We also receive trainees who are undergoing subspecialist training in subfertility. In addition, we receive trainees from the Diploma in Family Medicine and MD in Venereology and Community Medicine.
